After losing her husband six years ago, Amelia has to raise their son on her own. Now six, Samuel is a child hard to discipline and often tests his mother's patience. He also often dreams of an evil creature which he claims is coming to kill them. He becomes convinced the creature is Babadook, when a disturbing storybook called Mister Babadook mysteriously turned up at their house. Amelia brushes it off, thinking it is just his son's wild imagination playing tricks on him. When she starts seeing the creature herself, she realizes her son is telling the truth and danger awaits them.
