10-year-old Phiona Mutesi lives a tough life with her family in the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda. One day, she meets Robert Katende. The missionary teaches children how to play chess and Phiona, fascinated by the strategy board game, becomes a top player under his guidance. She goes on to compete in local competitions and tournaments, winning many over the years and is now regarded as a Ugandan chess champion.
