Life [Review]

Life, a polished, suspenseful sci-fi space horror thriller that keeps you right on the edge of your seat from the start till the closing moments of the movie; with one eye kept firmly shut in anticipation of those sudden horrifying attacks on screen.

On board, the ISS (International Space Station), 6 astronauts from different countries are on a mission to intercept a research pod from Mars to try and retrieve samples from the Red Planet. With the mission's primary goal achieved, Hugh (Ariyon Bakare), the scientist, proceeds to test various mixes of gas needed to get the right atmospheric air composition needed to bring a single cell found in the sample to life - to get irrefutable proof that there is life beyond earth.

There's a good mix of personalities and stereotypical characters with the 6 crew members; Roy (Ryan Reynolds) the joker of the bunch, David (Jake Gyllenhaal) the serious doctor, Kat (Olga Dihovichnaya) scientist and commander of the ISS, and Miranda (Rebecca Ferguson) the supervisory medic.

Everyone on board and back on Earth is ecstatic when that single cell starts to grow from a microscopic dot to a live specimen, giving them their scientific breakthrough. The specimen they named Calvin grows rapidly within days. However, things take a turn for the worst when Calvin turns bloodthirsty after viciously attacking a crew member; escaping from its containment area to roam freely on the ISS. With each taste of blood, Calvin grows in size and the crew members race against time to try and defeat this evolving life form before it destroys them all.

Too late, comes the realization that they have brought to life this now full sized alien creature; a creature that wiped out Mars millions of years ago. A single organism whose primal instinct is to survive by destroying anything in its path that's alive. Can their fail safe firewalls hold up? What will they have to do to win the fight against the alien and get themselves home to Earth without bringing Calvin along with them?

"Goodnight moon, goodnight room, goodnight cow jumping over the moon; goodnight light and the red balloon, goodnight stars, goodnight air...." You will love this if you are a fan of suspenseful horror flicks and thrillers set in space... and you definitely need to keep your eyes peeled for that petrifying twist at the end.

4/5 stars
