This movie adaptation of Paulette Jiles` historical novel of the same name is set in the year 1870. It follows Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, who travels from town to town across Texas reading news to locals. He one day agrees to rescue a girl, whose family has been killed, from the Kiowa tribe that has kidnapped her. He then has to transport her to her relatives in San Antonio.
