Only a few days after the end of the war in May 1945, a group of German prisoners of war are brought to Denmark and forced to disarm two million landmines. The landmines were scattered along the West Coast by the German occupying forces. Sergeant Carl Leopold Rasmussen, in charge of the group of weakened young men performing the dangerous task, has a deep hatred for the Germans, after suffering five years of hardship during the occupation. He lets his rage down on the prisoners but one day, a tragic incident changes his view of the enemy.
