B-boying or breaking, often called breakdancing, is a style of street dance that originated as a part of hip-hop culture among African American and Latino youths in New York City during the early 1970s while Battle of the Year, commonly referred to as BOTY, is an annual international b-boying series that began in 1990. It is a crew (as opposed to individual) competition. Benson Lee's Battle Of The Year uses this dance as the premise for the film, about an American b-boy crew heads to France to compete at the Battle of the Year International Championships starring Josh Holloway, Josh Peck and Caity Lotz.
