Ruhrpott, 1972: The chubby nine-year-old Hans-Peter (Julius Weckauf) likes to make others laugh – a rare talent he puts to practice daily in the grocery store of his grandmother Anne (Hedi Kriegeskotte). But unfortunately not everything in his life is rosy. His mother Margret (Luise Heyer) becomes depressed after an operation. His sad and hardworking father leaves him largely in the care of his two grandmothers, both with big hearts and strong personalities. Learning to overcome the emotional turmoil, he does use his comedic talents to not only cheer people up, but also to heal his own wounds. This touching origin story of one of Germany’s greatest entertainers, Hape Kerkeling, is helmed by Oscar-winning director of 'Nowhere in Africa'.
