James Gunn’s new Superman movie has powered its way to a new record, with the first teaser trailer for this year’s DCU movie becoming the most-viewed trailer for any Superman-related project ever on Warner Bros. YouTube Channel. The record was previously held by Zack Snyder’s third trailer for Man of Steel – sorry Snyder fans – but David Corenswet’s Kryptonian has swept aside Henry Cavill’s celebrated iteration in just a month, surpassing the 51 million views that trailer has on the channel.
Man of Steel was released in 2013, and kicked off Snyder’s DCEU with a new Superman for a new era. While the franchise was divisive from the start, Cavill certainly built a large fandom as the character, and his dubious ending in the post-credits scene of Black Adam was not what fans wanted for the actor. While this has led to many Snyder fans threatening to boycott the new DCU, it has not stopped Gunn’s Superman from becoming the most anticipated movie of 2025.
Although the film does not hit cinemas until July 11, the buzz around Superman is hard to ignore. Gunn is frequently interacting with fans on his social media accounts to both share tiny snippets of information and debunk wild theories about what could happen in the movie. One thing we do know is that this is an all-out ensemble piece, which brings together a huge cast of both familiar and obscure DC Comics characters and immediately sets up a new world order for the DCU.
James Gunn has already seen incredible success at Marvel Studios with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and he has also worked on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker series for Warner Bros. Discovery. Now, as the co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn’s position as writer and director of Superman is one that is probably as nerve-wracking as it is exciting. In short, the DCU’s real first impression all rests on Gunn’s shoulders.
