Retired sheriff George Blackledge and his wife Margaret live in a Montana ranch. After their son's death, they leave the ranch to rescue their young grandson. A dangerous family, who lives off the grid in the Dakotas and headed by Blanche Weboy, has the child and is unwilling to let him go, forcing George and Margaret to fight to get their grandson back.
