My Neighbors the Yamadas is based on the long-running comic strip of the same name by Japan's best-known comic strip writer and artist Ishii Hisaichi. It is told in a series of episodic vignettes that center around a middle-aged Japanese businessman, Takashi Yamada, and his family members. It offers a close look, often touching, and often humorous, at the kind of traditional family that may be disappearing in an increasingly modern, increasingly Westernized Japan. It is above all else the story of a family. Its location is Japan. Its values are very, very Japanese. Or are they?.
