As anyone who's watched any of the Star Wars sequel trilogy will already know, Daisy Ridley is no stranger to a spot of badass action. Fighting Kylo Ren on Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens, taking down the Praetorian Guards in The Last Jedi, *that* flip over the TIE Silencer in The Rise Of Skywalker — all in a day's work for our Daisy. But all of that pales in comparison to what the Magpie star has in store with her latest movie, Sky Original action joint Cleaner. Directed by none other than Goldeneye and Casino Royale helmsman Martin Campbell, this one is set to see Ridley get her John McClane on as an ex-soldier-turned-window-cleaner tasked with saving hundreds of people from a Clive Owen led cell of criminal activists — all while suspended at great height from a London skyscraper.
Sporting a fresh trim and a familiar look of steely determination, Ridley comes not to play in this first teaser for Cleaner. As Owen's extremist slams the "greedy, needy, cocky" well-to-dos at a corporate gala inside the energy firm HQ where Joey Locke (Ridley) works, the Rey actor's hand-to-handywoman can be seen punching, kicking, and defenestrating her way through Owen's goons as she mounts a personal mission to save her innocent capitalist employers — and her little brother. It's all high stakes, high energy stuff, with Ridley clearly doing at least most of her own stunts, and Campbell bringing the kind of cerebral, kinetic flair to his direction here that characterised his Bond movies.
Here's the official synopsis for the film, just in case we missed anything: "After a group of criminal activists take over an energy company’s annual gala to expose their corruption, their just cause is hijacked by an extremist who is ready to murder everyone in the building to send out his anarchic message. It falls to an ex-soldier turned window cleaner (Ridley) – suspended 50 storeys up on the outside of the London skyscraper – to save those trapped inside, including her younger brother." The cast also includes Taz Skylar, Flavia Watson, Rufus Jones, Richard Hope, Lee Boardman, and — for you 90s kids out there — Tracy Beaker's mum, Ruth Gemmell!
We'll find out whether Cleaner is destined to be the next Die Hard — or if it just, well, dies hard — when it hits Sky Cinema in 2025.
